ABOUT THE RELEASE

After almost eighteen years of deceptive silence, Brazen is back with Distance, an ambitious indie-rock epic where melancholic modulations and vocal harmonies intertwine on a soaring instrumental carpet. The eight tracks that make up the album are characterised by refined songwriting, carried by an epic breath that makes each track a journey in its own right. Composed, arranged and recorded remotely between London and Geneva over the course of almost a decade, the album is as musically polished as it is rich in narrative twists. The meticulous care taken in its conception gives it a timeless character that in no way detracts from its emotional intensity.

Arms Of The Sea“, the album’s first single, is a kind of epic protest song denouncing indifference to the tragic fate of the thousands of people who have drowned in the Mediterranean, victims of the closure and militarisation of Europe’s southern borders. “Did you think they could learn to fly? Well, it does seem we’ve lost all mankind, in the arms of the sea…”. In ‘Holocene Dies‘, the question of humanity’s future on this planet is raised, against a melancholy backdrop: “Is there a chance we wake? Before we turn to flames and millions die?” But the album ends on an optimistic note, driven by an upbeat tempo and a heady guitar melody: “Don’t mourn, organize. It’s time to occupy. Or so we say: we’ll make a change to this shit, if we are side by side” (“Bizarre Tragic Hollow Times”).

It seems like Brazen has had several lives. Formed at the end of the 1990s in Geneva (Switzerland), the band emerged at the turn of the millennium as an emo/post-hardcore outfit, laying the foundations for a sound universe of intertwining harmonies and raging melancholy on their debut EP …as floods decrease (2000, Snuff Records). Moving on to prog-tinged indie-rock, the melodic vein of which they dug with Orphaned (2003, Sticksister Records) and then Aura, Dora (2006, Saïko Records), Brazen has toured Europe, playing with the likes of Cave In, Blonde Redhead, Franz Ferdinand and Nada Surf. After an eclipse of almost two decades, Brazen returns with Distance, written between Geneva (CH) – where Thibault Schneeberger (vocals, guitars, bass) and Robin Jossen (guitars) still live – and London (UK) or Malmö (Sweden) – for Mark Blakebrough (drums, vocals). In memory of his time as bassist and singer with the group, Michel Blanc agreed to sing on “Running“.

Recorded by Brazen and by Serge Morattel (Knut, Ventura, Impure Wilhelmina, Shora, etc.) at Geneva’s Rec Studio, the album opens a new chapter in Brazen’s history, proving that the band has lost none of its harmonic richness, epic breath or sense of melodic storytelling.
