“Magellano” is an album entirely conceived a short distance from a port, a place that tastes like salt and oil, where the fishing boats rest after nights of toil and sweat.

It is the perfect place from which to sail away, and at the same time, is a place that offers no reason to stay.

The trip overseas is the intention of the album, a trip that leads to the shores of another world, riding waves made of clouds and smoke.

But this requires floating light, and hence the choice of a simple composition, consisting of a few tools, like acoustic guitars, soft percussion, penetrating voices coming from distant deserts come to rest in the shadow of the lighthouse.

Magellano is the second album of Jester At Work, a pseudonym behind which lies the songwriter Antonio Vitale…

5 years after they started from scratch, PAPIER TIGRE have built a name for themselves with two albums « PAPIER TIGRE » (2007) and « THE BEGINNING AND END OF NOW » (2008) and 350 shows in more than 20 countries over 3 continents, with the three- piece appearing at ATP among other festivals around the globe.
Their music is firmly entrenched in the tradition of inventive, challen- ging punk but combines elements of experimental pop compositions and aggressive math-rock. The band understands that a song being intelligent and complex need not exclude it from having a raw, danceable energy.
For their new album « RECREATION », the band teamed up with John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, the Roots, Bill Callahan, The pAper chAse…) to produce their most significant work yet. Pushing the limits of their unusual line-up (drums, 2 guitars, percussion, vocals), the band has matured into a devastatingly efficient unit, with instruments, ideas and personalities bouncing off each other in an audible culture of creativity…

Hazel-Rah “The Africantape EP”

Hazel-Rah began as Tim Byrnes’ inspiration to rise up to a personal challen- ge to compose a set of music that would compliment Toby Driver’s Tartar Lamb on a mid-winter tour of the United States that straddled 2006 and 2007. That famous tour ended tragicomically with the van breaking down on the way home in Tomah, Wisconsin. This initial Hazel-Rah lineup featured Byrnes on vocals and synth, Driver on guitar, and Friendly Bears’ Andrew Greenwald on drums. They played a set of three songs.
As a band, Hazel-Rah laid low for the next five years, as Tim was caught up into other musical responsibilities, including Anthony Braxton’s trumpet ensemble, Ron Anderson’s PAK, and Toby Driver’s Kayo Dot among other things. There were, however, some highlights from that time, including a southern U.S. tour with Forbes Graham (on drum machine) in summer ’07, a really short tour of New England and Philly with Forbes and Stern in summer ’08, opening slots on the PAK/Stig Noise Sound System tour of France in fall ’08, a house show in Seattle during the Kayo Dot Coyote sessions in summer ‘09, and a big show at John Zorn’s music space The Stone in February ’10, which featured an excellent lineup of David Andrew Moore on drums, Adam Minkoff on guitar, and Extra Life’s Charlie Looker on baritone guitar (with Driver making a special guest appearance mid-set)…

Ronin “Fenice”

A phoenix that rises from its own ashes is exactly the effect that Ronin invokes now, two years after L’Ulitmo Re”, having renovated its structure and its aims. Even if Bruno Dorella is once again the driving force of the new album, tribute should still be paid to the other conspirators who officially make up the quartet. Musicians of proven talent and international renown such as Nicola Ratti – the second guitarist and the experimental soul of the band who has to his name an enviable solo discography of albums released on prestigious European labels the likes of Anticipate Recordings (part of the Kompakt group) and the Italian label Die Schactel. Specializing in ambient-drone, Ratti colors the original tracks with decisive brushwork. The album’s opening triptych – “Spade”, Benvenuto” and “Selce” – is a pure mix of country-pyschedelic, almost as if the soundtrack to Jodorowsky’s masterpiece “El Topo” had been played by Ry Cooder. We then come to the partially renewed rhythym section composed of Chet Martino (Quasiviri) on bass and on drums the new entry Paolo Mongardi, an eclectic figure of the Italian music scene who has ranged the spectrum from the pyschedelia of Jennifer Gentle to the explosive math-rock of Zeus!, all the way through to pop-songwriter Il Genio. The ups and downs of “Jambiya” are the album’s ideal turning point. They seem to strike the chords of Sir Richard Bishops and his Sun City Girls (but even the mystic ones of Secret Chief 3’s Trey Spruance) in this western dance which soars into a downtown New York Morriconeian jazz noir thanks to Enrico Gabrielli’s piano…

Nedry – ‘Post Six’ and ‘Float’ from ‘In A Dim Light’ album by Monotreme Records

Nedry are a trio by way of London, Osaka and Bristol whose distillation of advanced rhythmic structures, low frequencies and raw human tones stand uniquely at a fascinating sonic crux of leftfield, club and indie juncture.

Drawing on the gothic undertones of David Lynch – and at points, absorbing T.S. Eliot’s ‘Four Quartets’, vocalist Ayu Okakita revels in ruminations urging acceptance of the shadows; to permit the darkness to settle around her. British bass music clings to few modern regulations. As grey areas become inviting, zones of conflict are transformed into fertile new ground. Nedry are dictating a path that recognizes no genre, no structures, no rules. Ripping progressive dance culture out of the bedroom producers’ smoke stained confines and planting it resolutely on the live stage, Matt and Chris utilize MPC, laptops, guitars and synths to create a deep, thoughtful musical space…

Tomat – ‘CE-2′ and ‘LovelyPlace’ from the album ‘01-06 June’ by Monotreme Records

Debut solo album of dreamy, drony sonic landscapes from Davide Tomat of N.A.M.B. Tomat is the solo project of Davide Tomat from Torino, Italy. He is also the chief songwriter and lyricist of the bands N.A.M.B. and Niagara. His solo debut album under the name Tomat showca- ses the more experimental side of his music.

The background of the album, according to Davide Tomat:

This record came to life in 6 days from the 1st to the 6th of June 2010. Each song is matched to an historical event that happened between the 1st and the 6th of June during human history.

I did a solo real time improvisation session for 6 days in my studio, recording each session in multi-track recordings, using only my voice, an analog monophonic sythesizer and a guitar through effects, loopers, computer and samplers, creating layers over layers of voices, sythesizers and guitar. No over dubs.

After 6 days of improvisation and 7 hours of music, on the 7th of June I started listening to all the music, isolating different tracks…at the end I had 36 different tracks. I thought about the idea that something that had happened in these 6 days in human history may have inspired me while I was putting out this music and these emotions.

So I did some research about the events that happened in the past between the 1st and the 6th of June and I matched each track to a different event. I tried to mach things and emotions that could be compatible, emotions that somehow inspired me in creating this music.

I isolated 21 tracks to work on and then after some edits I mixed 11 songs and I mastered them on the 7th of September 2011. This record is made 90% by vocals and 10% by an analog monofonic sythesizer and a guitar. It’s a drony experimental record that evokes sonic landscapes…

In 2008 a humble basement apartment in Brooklyn became the laboratory for the Brooklyn-based Post Rock/Electroacoustic duo, Live Footage. Mike Thies and Topu Lyo first met at a Halloween party, unaware that years later they would be described as some of the finest “surrealist soundtrack composers” in the making by scoring some of the most eclectic contemporary pieces on air, in dance and in tune compo- sing their own music. Conceived through the art of improvisation, Lyo plays cello, incorporating the use of live loops and a handful of electronics with no pre-recorded samples of any kind.

“Willow Be is a discrete album, a precious collection of urban contemporary music, and Live Footage, a sort of Balmorrhea of the city. From here, a sincere compliment…” – La Blogotheque

What is hidden behind Quakers & Mormons? The Answer cannot be revealed so easily, but it has to be pursued, sought and wanted so deeply as the Spirit of a man in embracing a ne Faith. A True Belief that covers the entire human emotional corpus leading it to a complete convinction and obedience.
That’s how the simplest words’ connections become Sermons and rhythmi- calhits on the sampler surface turn into Liturgy. The point is catching the Concept, turn it into an Idea, and pursue this to the end. The importance of Concepts and Ideas makes our priests not to submit themselves to the common rules of appearance, in fact, they dress long monk like suit and they always hide their faces. What is important is not the way we look but the Energy and The Idea we want to express…

There is a sense of quiet, reserved confidence about Hither Thither, O Emperor’s debut LP (nominated for Choice Music Prize 2011). Many commentators have noted that it sounds more like the recording of a band on their third or fourth album, such is the display of maturity and self-awareness on show. This may be testament to the band’s having grown up together as childhood friends, discovering the same records, learning the same tunes and playing in the same venues with different bands in a thriving local music scene. You could say that although this record is their first, it is the result of many years of growing together musically, uncovering a collective identity and an acute awareness of the nuances that made their favourite records so special…

Picore “Assyrian Vertigo”

In its inherent poetic and cinematic way, assyrian vertigo is the invented chronicle, the sonic fresco that freely testifies of a civilization which, lost by in his thirst for conquest, has left nothing but rocks and wind.
With its obscure and poorly documented origins, its alleged violent yet refined way of life, its own way of finding the purest form of worship to their gods in the battles and conquests, its constant headlong rush towards history, its wild expansionism, its own inside struggles, the rising of the assyrian empire was vertigineous, and its fall was sudden.
Immersive and conceptual, this new Picore album imagines itself as a collec- tion of restored fragments, forged remains of this culture that mix story with history.
Assyrian vertigo is an album three years of hard work in the making, made of compo- sition, decomposition, recomposition, multiple rewritings, sound modelling, and a constant refinement of the musical voice. As such, it is the collective’s most ambitious effort so far, in many ways…

Influenced by artists ranging from Bob Dylan and Roger Waters to Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt, Minneapolis-based A WHISPER IN THE NOISE was formed in 2002 by West Thordson, who grew up on a large patch of farmland in the rural Minnesota town of Hanska (population 406). As an adult, Thordson moved into the abandoned elementary school he attended as a boy, where he composed in the music room in which he had played as a child, wandering the empty halls at night. This dark, dramatic sense of loneliness and solitude was channeled into the unique and darkened sound A Whisper In The Noise became known for. In ever-changing line up constellations and phases of full and half existence the band granted the world three albums which without a doubt can be ranged among the most unique and outstanding albums that have ever been released. Deeply inspired by a rural surrounding and the will and consciousness to listen to an inner voice and dig deep for honest emotions, no matter if they create pure bliss or pitch black scare A WHISPER IN THE NOISE still remain one of the most emotional bands walking this planet…
