Buildings “Melt Cry Sleep”

Formed in 2006, BUILDINGS is a (insert label) three piece from Minneapolis. Their music is loud, aggressive, and dynamic. Melt Cry Sleep is the band’s 2nd full-length, and the follow up to 2008’s self-released Braille Animal (recently reissued on doubleplusgood). Engineer, Jacques Wait (Off With Their Heads, Motion City Soundtrack) has perfectly reined in the band’s furious energy, allowing the 10 tightly wound tracks on Melt Cry Sleep room to breathe in contrast to their raw & visceral live sets.

One might think from the blistering opener “Rainboat” that it’s all loud, fast rules, but BUILDINGS is deceptive in their songwriting. Often switching gears several times within a song, as evidenced on tracks “Born on a Bomb” and “Invocation”. New bassist Sayer Payne’s driving bass lines and Travis Kuhlman’s frantic drumming work in tandem to steer through the chaos on songs like “I Don’t Love My Dog Anymore” and “Night Cop. Combined with Brian Lake’s snarling vocals and eerie, atonal guitar on songs like “Wrong Cock” and the madness of closer, “Crystal City”, BUILDINGS never end where they began…

After excellent reviews and endless touring all over the world, supporting bands like Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu and Sic Alps, the Italian weirdos Father Murphy are back with a brand new album titled “Anyway your children will deny it”. It is the latest, boldest installation of an ongoing series of albums investigating the band’s favorite themes: life, death, love, religion and even more death.
For this album, the Italian trio comprised of Reverend Freddie (vocals, guitar), Chiara Lee (vocals, keyboards, percussion) and Vittorio De Marin (vocals, drums, strings), took some time to craft and expand their sonic palette to almost epic proportions, unleashing an LP that is their most personal, sophisticated and—dare I say—accessible work to date…

After four years and two EPs, Sydney’s The Crooked Fiddle Band have built a solid reputation as festival favourites, and with their debut album Overgrown Tales, they capture the raw energy, warm acoustics and cinematic depth of their live show.

The band recorded the album in Chicago, in Feburary 2011 with legendary engineer Steve Albini (Pixies, Nirvana, Joanna Newsom). Whilst the heaviest snowstorms in more than a decade blanketed the city, Albini captured the band’s raw energy live in the studio.

These overgrown tales are twisted stories behind tunes that are mostly instrumental – like finding a folk tale deep in a forest, rooted in tradition but with the newest of shoots, and a few thorns…

Sweet Nostalgia is the second full length release by the stellar country/roots quartet of young women, Oh My Darling. Inspired by Classic country, Appalachian Old Time, and Francophone Traditional music, the songs of Sweet Nostalgia are strikingly original, while evoking the lexicon of these diverse musical influences. In only three short years, the band has toured ceaselessly, headlining sold out shows across Europe and Canada, becoming crowd favourites at country and folk festivals, and winning the hearts of all who come to experience their energetic live show. It’s this love for live performance that Oh My Darling strove to capture while recording Sweet Nostalgia. In just seven days, in a straw bale house in Roseisle, Manitoba, all 10 tracks were recorded live, with the Juno Award winning producer Steve Dawson. The result is a raw and honest sound that has the exuberance of a live show, and shines a spotlight on each of these girls’ extraordinary talents as musicians and songwriters…

Extraordinary Tales Of A Lemon Girl » is an epic soundtrack, a trilogy equally inspired by glorious Italian Gialli than the odysseys from Homer, Lewis Carroll or James Joyce. Divided in three sections depicting a « fruity » Lemon girl’s nonsensical journeys to oneiric lands. Once again Philippe Petit offers a thematic framework, whose musical script only aims at revealing a beginning and its ending while inviting the listener to wander along the variety of sounds, melodies, textures, themes… Surprise, surprise.

M+A “Remixes. Yes”

Italian electronic duo M+A (Michele Ducci, Alessandro Degli Angioli) follow up their ‘things.yes’ album with an EP of remixes of songs by Nedry, Polinski, Emay and Joycut that are more reinventions than remixes. They also include a very fine cover of ‘Paper Planes’ by MIA.
In their own words:

Remixes.
“These are the 4 remixes created after the release of Things.yes. These remixes are not like ordinary remixes, they are our own tracks and, at the same time, they are somebody else’s. We’re not consistent with our songs, let alone with others’. What seemed like a minor and hasty project, ended up fascinating us. We instantly realised that they were turning into something more than simple remixes. This ep is not just a collection of remixes, it has also become a little “+” of new pieces. A little “+” that gave us the chance to say more Things that –for lack of space- we were not able to say in our album.
Yes. a remix is made by many hands and no hands at all. Yes. a remix does not have to have any respect whatsoever for the original song. and Yes. at the end of the day our remix is like a new piece.”…

Joan & The Sailors are not out for a sunshine cruise. With their twelve-song debut “Mermaid”, they set sail in stormy seas. This melancholia-saturated album displays the whole range of the band’s work. Within seconds, the opener “Silly Loving Lovesong For The Humble Gentleman” places the listener in a unique sonic cosmos. Playful, but unobtrusive drums follow the vocals. Then an electrifying interplay of guitars and a pulsing bass line take over, locking rhythm and melody together. The musical voyage concludes with the epic “Mermaid”, a token of the quiet side of Joan & The Sailors. It takes the listener on an intimate, magical trip, whose emotional climax is the chorus, in which vocals and instruments are blended together Associations to water can be found in the name of the band and the title of their album, but especially in their music: It is epic like the open sea, wild like an mountain river, and as grand as a crystal-clear mountain lake…

Shelley Short “Then Came the After”

Shelley Short writes songs inspired by experiences she had growing up in Portland Oregon, where she now lives. She grew up with musicians around, lots of records, books, fictional and non-fictional characters, complex movie plots, and her own very overactive imagination. Shelley started writing songs in high school on the bass guitar, and learned covers such as Mo Tucker’s “After Hours” and Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I could Cry.” Several years later, her love affairs with the songs of Jimmie Rodgers and Ween, spurred her to learn to play guitar, and to write songs again.

Shelley loves being at home, but a life lived on the road has been the usual as of late. This has changed her definition of what home really is, a subject that her new album ‘Then Came the After’ explores. “Change is bound to happen, you never know when, or why, so to try to find happiness wherever you are is as close to home as I can get at the moment.”
Touring with and opening for the likes of Tom Brosseau, Darren Hanlon, M Ward, Loudon Wainwright the 3rd, and Whispertown has kept her busy in Australia, Europe and the U.S.A. for the past few years. Shelley is excited to keep up the momentum of life on the road, especially when she can share the road with good friends…

This Madrid quintet understands that the future is now. In this electric mix, with its roots somewhere between ecstatic psychedelia, kosmische musik, and the Nuggets tradition, Lüger have found the perfect blend to keep growing, or, at least the energy to attract the attention of a varied and tuned-in public.
They made a clear declaration of intent with their self-titled debut.

“It was a sign of maturity for an entire underground scene that was crying out for a work of this weight and depth,” they said at the time. Then came the U.S. tour, the much talked about shows at Primavera Sound and South By Southwest, and topping lists of the best albums of the year by the Spanish press – all done naturally, carrying the weight on their backs, or those of Facebook and Bandcamp. Since then, Lüger has been highly spoken of the kraut trailblazers. Five guys able to connect Oneida with Ornette Coleman and Neurosis with Amon Düül II…

Adam’s Castle (Sami Jano, Piano/Rhodes; Eric Adams, Bass; Zach Eichenhorn, Drums) is a three-piece instrumental, experimental band from Detroit, now residing in Brooklyn, NY.
Stripped of distractions and easy answers (like guitars and lead singers) that manipulate a listener’s most obvious and primitive emotional responses; Adam’s Castle delivers an eclectic and unpre- dictable sound that traverses jazz, classical and rock – at times tightly composed, at others steady and driving with subtle mood shifts. Their insistence on collective composition produces an intense synergy that highlights the creative energy of all three of its members. Castle’s sweeping, emotionally transformative music requires listeners to dig for an authentic response, but it doesn’t demand – it entices, titillates, and enriches…
