Building on his genre-busting animated/stop motion video opera “Video Musics” (2009 Sickroom(US) / Africantape(EU)), Alexis Gideon, after two years of dogged research and collaboration, is set to premiere that work’s follow-up, “Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong” (Disjecta in Portland, September 3). A one-hour multimedia video opera based on the 16th-century Chinese novel “The Journey to the West,” “Video Musics II” joins the brightest lights of contemporary animation (Becca Taylor (Punk Planet, Arthur); Cynthia Star (Coraline, Moral Orel, Robot Chicken); Ezra Claytan Daniels (Darkhorse Comics, Top Shelf Comics)) with the most promising talents of contemporary music (Rachel Blumberg (M Ward, Arch Cape); Cory Gray (Norfolk & Western, Carcrashlander); Shelley Short (Hush)) to create an aural and visual universe that gleefully transcends both media. Is it film or music, high art or pop? Gideon’s work would fit snugly at either the Whitney Biennial or SXSW, which is to say it cannot be contained, really, by either venue. Marked throughout by the ambition, commitment to detail, and refusal to settle that have earned Gideon a cult following on both sides of the pond…

Little Black Dress is the brainchild of veteran Dallas musicians Toby Pipes and Nolan Thies. The two have collaborated on the writing, engineering and producing of all the cuts that will appear on their debut album Snow in June. Their unique sound might remind you of a deep-cut track from one of your favorite 4AD compilations with influences spanning decades of innovative music – from synth driven sounds of Depeche Mode and Cabaret Voltaire, to the droning but noisy guitars and under-stated vocals of My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain, to the layered melodic swirling of the Cocteau Twins…

They represent the very tense of the verb rock’n'roll. A wink at the past, eyes wide open in the here and now and the will to shrug off any constraining label that might come along. This attitude converged in the sound of Rainy Days, which answers to its own name in its own right. Rainy Days is the second recording by Bad Love Experience and the first to be released after winning number one Fuori dal Mucchio 2006/2007 competition as best debut release by Italian artist, which was issued by Mabel records.

The original trio was formed by Valerio Casini (born in 1985, vocals and guitar), Emmanuel Voliani (born in 1985, bass and vocals) and Gabriel Bogi (born in 1985, drums). On this album, Claudio Laucci (born 1982, piano, organ and back-up vocals), also organist for the group Le Gorille, joined the bandwagon giving Bad Love Experience an even greater groovy sound….

HELIOGABALE is a Paris band whose road met Steve Albini’s, Al Sutton’s or the late Iain Burgess (rip). This time they stopped by the doorstep of French sound engineers Patrick Müller and Antoine Gaillet who respectively recorded and mixed down the band’s sixth album to be released in 2010. Since its beginning in 1992 HELIOGABALE has been using change and evolution as keywords of its music; each album was a break with the previous one, highlighting a unique style…

Soon

‘What It Means To Be Left-Handed’ is the stunning new full-length from Mice Parade. It is the first to be released in the band’s second decade of existence, the sixth to be released through FatCat, and a lustrous contribution to a glowing musical canon.

Coloured by splashes of West African Highlife, Flamenco, Brazillian Jazz, even 80’s indie-rock, the album is knowingly un-hip and as distinctive and idiosyncratic as the band’s previous records. It is a giddy-paced, flickering, enveloping, soaring and respectful nod to the musical influences that lend themselves to the band’s sound, yet it is never derivative…

Lush Rimbaud “The Sound of the Vanishing Era”

In bygone days Lush Rimbaud’s home town of Ancona, next to the port of Ancona on Italy’s east coast, was the hub of the country’s locomotive network. Latterly it has spawned a music scene of growing influence. Fittingly, ‘The Sound Of The Vanishing Era’ – follow up to the forward looking elctropunk of ‘Action From The Basement’ – begins with the sound of chuffing trains, which snake into writhing hypnotic drum beats locked onto raw, anthemic guitars, synthesized basslines and seething, witty-politti lyrics. Released on vinyl (with free cd for the older generation) with a hand-etched cover featuring anarchist philosopher Errico Malatesta riding a chameleon-headed cow into a rainbow. Inside, sounding like a magnificent, despera- te attempt at salvation for a rapidly disappearing Italy, before Berlusconi finally facelifts the country, fake tanned and smiling, into his world of titty-tv, masonic mausoleums and political polenta. It explores deeper and darker into electro rock’n’roll territory than its predecessor and also includes a cameo from the british poet/drummer Jan Noble, reading a translation of one of Malatesta’s freedom championing monologues over an echoing, neo-Neu rockout…

The Lonesome Southern Comfort Company “Charles The Bold”

John decided to record a solo album in 2008 trying to explain his deepest musical influences. He has been a member, for years and years, of an instrumental band and he was probably sick and tired of compromises; to fight and to shout for every single reason and for every single chord in the song-writing process.
When he got the idea of playing alone he immediately rent a studio for a couple of days and, by the time he invited friend and “label-mates” like Peter Kernel & Lake Nation, the work was already half the way out. Lonesome Southern Comfort Company, published in august 2008 by On The Camper Records, it’s a folk and a country rush. Just in time for a political “outing” a couple of months before 2008 U.S. elections…

Takka Takka is a New York City band in the truest sense of the term. Their early work displayed a keen sense of the city’s rich musical heritage, with hints of the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan adding a refreshing element of timelessness to sound that was equally informed by indie rock. And now, with their most recent work, the sprawling, beautiful Migration, they’ve begun to incorporate subtle elements of music from all over the globe. They’re a reflection of the New York you don’t read about in the fashion magazines, of a place where it’s impossible to ignore the awe-inspiring diversity of your surroundings — a place where, if you’re just willing to pay attention, there are so many new ideas presenting themselves every single day that that it would be a shame to stick with one for too long…

The Poison Arrows “Newfound Resolutions”

A mere fifteen months after the release of their acclaimed debut LP First Class, and Forever (May of 2009, File Thirteen Records), Chicago’s The Poison Arrows follow up with a more ambitious sophomore album Newfound Resolutions. Even at over 70 minutes, this second album was completed in a fraction of the time of their first album thanks to their growing experience as a band, and real-world thematic inspirations. Let’s face it, the past year or two have been challenging for most. Members of Chicago’s The Poison Arrows are no exception enduring a number of unthinkable dramas better interpreted within the album’s lyric liner notes rather than explained here. So Patrick Morris, Adam Reach, and Justin Sinkovich did what most friends do in such dire circumstances, they sat around listening to records and talked it all out. There also happened to be a recording studio in the basement full of instruments where they expeditiously wrote and demo’ed their new album.

As The Poison Arrows did with First Class, and Forever, the band then went into Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio A with engineer Greg Norman to record the basic tracks. Album two was then overdubbed at Justin’s basement studio The Plaza where a series of close friends also contributed guest appearances. It was then mixed at Justin’s house and Greg Norman’s home studio…

Fops is a collaboration between lyricist Chadwick Donald Bidwell of Ral Partha Vogelbacher and singer Dee Kesler of Thee More Shallows.
Taking their musical cues from the syncopated electronic figures of Kraut-Rockers such as Cluster and Faust, and the propulsive, brooding pop of the bands they grew up listening to in the 80’s, the duo recorded two albums: Album 1, ‘Yeth Yeth Yeth’, will be released in September 2010, and Album 2, ‘Priests in them Caves’, will follow in early 2011.
Both LPs are novels at heart, investigating the possible and impossible, gaudy and fantastical, mundane and downright depressing pasts and futures of a single protagonist. In the world of Fops, Kesler is the narrator, telling stories in Bidwell’s singular lyrical style.
Prepare to dance whilst scratching your head…

Nimm “Generazione Uno”
